Abstract

This paper explores the dynamics of socio-religious interactions among the inter-ethnic fishermen community in the former seaport of the Sultanate of Banten, i.e. in the Karangantu Port, Serang, Banten. The study focuses on the socio-religious interactions between migrants and local residents, and among the migrants themselves. This paper more broadly investigates the government’s policies on marine and fisheries sectors since 2000. Main issues discussed are the background of the history of Banten as the center of maritime power; the arrival and interaction between foreign and Nusantara traders and fishermen and local people; decentralization policies; patterns and forms of the inter-ethnic interactions; and the influence of decentral-ization policies towards the development of Banten’s maritime world. This paper uses ethnographical and historical approaches. The author argues that the inter-ethnic interactions in the Banten north coast area are socio-economic-cultural interactions that have long been intertwined and can be regarded as ideal multiculturalism interactions on the one hand. However, the policies of the central and regional government in marine and fisheries sectors have not generated the right solution to improve and empower Banten’s fishermen community, as it did occur in the 16th and 17th centuries.

Abstract

The existence of the PCTA-I (Persaudaraan Cinta Tanah Air-Indonesia/Brotherhood for the Love of Indonesia Homeland) plays a pivotal role, especially for underprivileged people regardless of their religion and faith, tribe, and race. This organization has been, therefore, undeniably desirable to help the Indonesian society overcome their social problems. Focusing its discussion on the PCTA-I, this article seeks to answer such questions as how this organization has been initiated; what does it do to help overcome national problems, and what are the obstacles it faces in implementing the programs and how does it overcome such obstacles? A number of leaders and members of the PCTA-I Central Board have been interviewed. The murshid of the Tarekat Ṣiddīqīyah has been among the main informants of this study. Employing qualitative approach by focusing on interview, questionnaire, and documentation as the sources of data, the study indicates that the PCTA-I has been able to efficiently implement its programs due to solid participation and robust support of its voluntary community. Through its programs, the PCTA-I attempts to build what so-called “the soul of society” in order to achieve civilized and enlightened future of Indonesia.

Abstract

This article reanalyzes Ibn Taymīyah’s position and his thought in Sufism and anti-Sufism. The article is also expected to find the precise typology to describe the qualification of Ibn Taymīyah’s Sufism other than the Sunnī and Falsafī typologies. As a formalist and literalist thinker, Ibn Taymīyah has been famously known as an anti-Sufi Muslim scholar. There have been a number of modern Salafis who refute any relationship of Ibn Taymīyah and Sufism. Ibn Taymīyah has criticized such philosophical doctrines of Sufism as waḥdat al-wujūd, ḥulūl, and ittiḥād, which are considered to have deviated from the foundations of Islam. Along with his criticism, Ibn Taymīyah offers solution by recovering the earliest and authentic traditions of Sufism when it is viewed as to have obscured the authenticity of knowledge based on the al-Qur’ān and Sunnah. The product of his Sufism can be, therefore, categorized in Salafi-Sufism typology in addition to other such pIbn Taymīyahopular typologies as Sunnī and Falsafī. The pattern of the Taṣawwuf Salafī—which is deemed as being appropriate to describe the existence of Ibn Taymīyah’s Sufism—does not, basically, accept takwil upon the religious texts. The aim of his Sufism is to strengthen one’s faith and help him/her to purify their soul and morality

Abstract

This article describes the concepts of relationship of God and man from theological point of view along with Sufism. It focuses on Ibrāhīm al-Kurānī’s view on the issue. This article confirms that al-Kurānī attempts to reconcile theological views of Ash‘arīyah and the divine worldviews of the Sufis, especially that of Ibn ‘Arabī’s philosophical Sufism. Al-Kurānī argues that there has been interconnectedness between common concepts expressed by the Sufis such as waḥdat al-wujūd and tajallī and the concept of al-kasb promulgated by Ash‘arīyah. The author finds that the concepts of ittiḥād and ḥulūl are not two mystical concepts that explain the relationship of God and man, rather these two concepts are a mere psychological condition sensed and experienced by the Sufis who try to enter the realm of ma‘rifat. Al-Kūrānī also argues that the relation of God and man can be explained through the concept of tajallī. He sees that this concept is compatible with Ash‘arīyah’s concept of al-kasb. Al-Kūrānī adds that causality is not an undoubtedly exact matter. It means that the causality does not discord against the notion of waḥdat al-wujūd.

Abstract

An effort to preserve and utilize manuscripts in this archipelago, especially religious manuscripts, is very important due to, at least, two reasons. Firstly, there has been abundant important information pertinent to religious phenomena in the manuscripts. Secondly, physical condition of the manuscripts has been increasingly fragile. Following the process of choosing the manuscript, the author has selected one of the manuscripts preserved in the State Museum of North Sumatra. This study employs the theory of philology, literature and history in analyzing the manuscript. Analyses are focused on the language used, the cultural background of the manuscript, and the social history of the region where it has been written. The findings of this study tell us that the manuscript, named Kashf al-Gharā’ib, is a classical Islamic manuscript which still has been well preserved at the State Museum of North Sumatra. It contains the scientific information of fiqh (Islamic law), especially discussing about the way of worshipping the God. The manuscript also consists of religious poems and problems of adab (ethics). Of the three topics discussed in this manuscript, I give considerable attention on worship and ethical issues.

Abstract

The article attempts to measure ideological preference and religious attitude of the students of Alauddin State Islamic University (UIN) Makassar. The typology of religious understanding is categorized into radical, moderate, and liberal. These three typologies help us to observe preference indicators based on students’ responses to four categorical variables, namely Islam and religious pluralism, formalization of Islam (relation of religion and state), Islam and intellectual discourse, and perception of jihad and religious violence. Employing quantitative approach, the author tries to measure the level of religious preferences of UIN Alauddin’s students within positivistic paradigm by organizing the data into a pattern, category, and basic unit description. The study finds that the level of preference of four variables and 16 questions asked to the students of UIN Alauddin shows us index result 2.76 or moderate category. However, it is also found that there has been potential preference, within the same time, into radical attitude. The reason is that in some variables I find shocking index numbers, which are close to radical verge as it can be seen in the variables of Islam and pluralism and the formalization of Islam which reach the index 2.49 and 2.40 respectively. Keywords: ; religious attitude; radical; moderate; liberal.

Abstract

The article examines typological category of al-Shawkānī’s “theological product”, which cannot be categorized as a part of Sunnī. This view is hold by Muḥammad Ḥusayn al-Dhahabī and Muḥammad ‘Alī Ayāzī. Al-Dhahabī concludes that al-Shawkānī’s theological thought is seen as being Sunnī but his work, Fatḥ al-Qadīr, is classified as al-Zaydīyah. Ayāzī, on the other side, says that al-Shawkānī’s theology tends to be more similarly rational to al-Zaydīyah and al-Mu‘tazilah. The author seeks to discuss the issue by exploring al-Shawkānī’s interpretation of theological verses on free will, pre-destination, and the relevance of revelation and human’s ratio. This study finds that al-Shawkānī’s theological arguments tend to be closely similar to Ahl al-Sunnah’s theological doctrines compare to that of al-Mu‘tazilah and al-Zaydīyah although he surroundedly grew up among the very rational al-Zaydīyah. It can be observed, for an instance, in his view of human’s deeds which clearly indicates him as having close position to the thought of al-Māturidīyah Bukhāra. In terms of the relevance of human’s ratio and the function of revelation, al-Shawkānī’s theological arguments are harmonious with al-Ash‘arīyah’s ideology.

Abstract

This article seeks to figure out socio-religious reciprocity pertinent to the pluralistic context of Indonesia within its various dimensions of life, especially the religious aspect, through what so-called civil religion. The very notion of civil religion reflects religious, social, and political maturity. The religions, in this context, function as a pivotal source of moral-ethics which generate spirit to build a strong nation-state to pursue its objectives. At this point, the state becomes a shared sacred home to all of its citizens which is free of fear and anxiety. The state plays an undoubtedly important role to protects its people and provide them a means of development in order to allow them to exhume religious freedom and reach a holy meaningful life. It will subsequently enhance and strengthen culture of dialog. This article supports an argument that in order to bring about the vision of civil religion in Indonesia we require three least possible conditions, namely heterogeneous religions which generate positive morality, the culture of sincere dialog, and freedom of religion.

Abstract

Sufism is an actualization of the doctrine of Tasawuf about purification of the soul towards God as a form of realization of the Prophet’s hadith on al-iḥsān. Sufism presents three forms of activity, namely the purification of the soul, Sufi behavior, and Sufi movements. Historically, Sufism has featured a distinctive and dialectical character. Classical Sufism features five characters, namely ascetic, practical, asceticism driven by fear of God, the concept of maḥabbah, and the concept of maḥabbah for ma‘rifah. Modern Sufism features four characters, namely presentation of sharī‘ah-based Sufism with no prominent social role any longer, adaptability to modern environments, expression of new political role as a pioneer of the modern nationalist movement, expression of Sufi militancy movement in the late colonial context. Contemporary Sufism presents nine characters, namely Sufism as a variant of transnationalism, the change in the relationship of authority and pattern of association in Sufism, the emphasis of Sufism as a mean of dedication, accommodative attitude towards the new regime, Sufism as the basis of civil society for political mobilization, the development of unique forms of local voluntary associations, the solution-based attitude of Sufism in political archetype, merging of Sufism with the spirit of Salafi and political activism, and the existence of relations of globalization, transnationalism, and hybridity.

Abstract

The article seeks to reveal the transmission and motive of Ibn Aṭā’ Allah al-Sakandarī’s al-Ḥikam recitation in Pesantren Tambakberas Jombang under the guidance of KH. Jamaludin Ahmad. This study employs quantitative and qualitative methods. The qualitative method is used to describe the pattern of transmission of al-Ḥikam which has been carried out at Pondok Pesantren Tambakberas, while the quantitative one is intended to measure the perceptions of those involved in the recitation of the book in regard with Sufism and political motives that colored the transmission process. Non-parametric inferential statistics are used to measure such perceptions of motives. The recitation of al-Ḥikam constantly transforms the values of Sufism onto the pupils. It can be seen, for instance, within the illustration of such Sufism doctrines as seeking and earning money from lawful occupation, self-restraint from temptations of the world, helping other people, giving charity for the seek of God to face the hereafter life, prohibition of lavish life as it will be the greatest temptation to gain God’s blessing, performing continuous and sincere repentance (tawbah naṣūḥ), leaving any unlawfully vague matters (shubhāt), and living independently and abstinence-begging.
