Abstract

The discourses about religion will never come to end. Religion will always be a topic of public sphere and cannot be separated from subjective views. Religion carries the important aspect from which it functions as a vehicle for human being to act of how runs our life in this world. This condition tends to convey religion into an exclusive side. On the one hand, for its adherents, religion (faith) is a basic principle that funnels them to achieve the mean of their life. On the other hand, religion also guide its adherents how to interact with their surroundings politically, economically, socially and religiously. It means that religion is operational and functional doctrine. In social life, religion is used to have such condition where all the structure is well constructed. Basically, the ?big religions? (Judaism, Christianity and Islam) are from the same derivation: Semitic. Tauhid is one example of that derivation, besides universal values which inherently arise from those religions. From this point of view, we can say that religion actually has already brought such linear characters among one and another. In this regard, this article attempts to portray the convergences of those religions by using the method of interpretative analysis

Abstract

The history of Jewish Nusantara in Indonesia is unclear whether Jewish came to Indonesia or otherwise. The fact that in Indonesia regulation, Judaism is not part of religions officially recognized by the state, add more suspicions that Judaism is not well accepted in Indonesia. In addition, Indonesia people, objectively, factually and historically speaking, have no much information about Judaism either in terms of religion, social, cultural and politics. In terms of academic studies, Historical and scientific record are not yet capable to explore much information about them. On one hand, the history of Judaism in Indonesia (Yahudi Nusantara) is academically and culturally limited. On the other hand, public discussion and debate relating to this topic?which tend to describe Jews historically and stereotypically?are rising and growing. This article aims to narrow the gap between both of two mentioned realities to explore historical existence of Jews in Indonesia. It will elucidate specific moments when Jews reality has been transforming and challenging in the context of Indonesian culture. Using this paradigm, the article perceives Jews as a dynamic and moving survival, like other realities. Therefore, this article intends to build good understanding of Judaism, in general, and Indonesian Jews in particular.

Abstract

Abstract

Abstract

The history of prophecy in general and the existence of Prophet Mohammad in particular are the evidence of the important role of Islam as religion of liberation. It means that Islam intends to pose human position into precise site, the caliphate. Muhammad Iqbal states this position as co-cretio of God. Furthermore, revelation of the Quran, according to Farid Esack, is progressive revelation. Quran is a scripture of liberation. Even though, this spirit is often arrested in the interpretations of Quran. These interpretations are often constructed only for the interest of power or the pursuit of elite. Therefore, spirit of Quranic liberation misses its strength and vitality. At this point, Farid Esack gives his attention and his intellectual concern. The weakness of Quranic interpretation inspires Farid Esack to formulate methodology of Quranic interpretation. Esack named this methodology as ?liberative hermeneutics?. Esack focuses to humanize human, based on (criticizing) power system and structure of South Africa. Farid Esack gives a strong foothold to his hermeneutic theory on theological system. The choice built by him is very precise. Esack?s excess compared to other intellectual such as Arkoun and Fazlur Rahman is that Esack involves in the act of liberation and the intensity of the dialectic in the field with people of other faiths and ethnic groups and races

Abstract

Religious understanding of the texts and doctrines towards women issues has not come to the final. Cultural construction and professional religious interpretation toward religious scripts also contribute on the woman issues especially in relation with unbalanced relationship between man and woman. Many religious interpretations then put women in secondary level with men as the result that they, women, are seen as men belonging that can be authoritatively subjected as much as men wants, including of violence. Up to this time, the domestic violence happens with regards to the women as the victims, and it is supposed that religious understanding is taking part in contributing the ?act of violence? towards women?s existence. So that religion, in this case, remains problematic in shaping the social construction of men and women relations. This article aims to explore more causes of women?s violence and attempts to scrutinize religious interpretation on the texts of gender and family issues. This article argues that religious institution and religious education have big role to shape the contemporary religious understanding towards women?s life; and both religious institution and religious education may also become the indispensable foundation of empowering woman by giving new interpretation of the women public space.
